Recap:
JERSEY CITY, NJ (February 8, 2010)- The Saint Peter's College Peahens (9-14, 5-7 MAAC) lost to the Manhattan Jaspers in the final minute, 59-57. Four Peahen players scored in double figures including Quiana Porter who needed one more rebound to receive her first double double of her career. Jynae Judson had a career high seven assists.
The first two minutes of the game saw Saint Peter's jump out to a 4-0 after a jumper from Jessica Coles and Natasha Morris. Morris would go back on defense after her two point shot and swat away a potential shot by the Jaspers. However, less than two minutes later, Manhattan responded by tieing up the game. Both teams would remain close throughout the half and the biggest lead would come with 2:48 left. Morris' three pointer gave Saint Peter's a 29-23 lead. The Jaspers would get the game within three by the end of the half, making the score 33-30 at halftime. Saint Peter's shot 50% from the field in the half while Manhattan would go to shoot 30%. A big reason why the Jaspers were able to stay in the game was from free throws. Manhattan had a 21 to six free throw attempt advantage over Saint Peter's.
Coles opened up the scoring in the second half, giving Saint Peter's a five point advantage. The Peahens would remain in the lead until the 12:59 mark of the half. A one and one situation for Manhattan tied the game up at 42. Manhattan would take their first lead of the game on two successful free throw shots with 6:55 to go. Over the course of the next five and a half minutes, Saint Peter's would find themselves trailing or tied. After Coles' free throw shot tied the game, Charlene Riddick's one of three steals forced a Jaspers turnover. Neither team would take the lead until Manhattan's Michelle Pacheco gave the Jaspers a one point lead on a free throw. Porter's missed lay up with four seconds remaining was followed by a second chance opportunity. After the ball went out of bounce off a Jasper player, Porter would get called on an offensive foul off an in bound pass. Saint Peter's would foul and see Manhattan make one of two free throws. Morris' last second desperation shot fell short paving way to a two point Manhattan win.
Despite the loss, Saint Peter's outshot Manhattan from the field, 48.9% to 35.7%. The Peahens did however have 21 turnovers compared to 16 for Manhattan.
The Peahens will travel to Loudonville, NY to play the Siena Saints on Saturday, February 13th at 2pm. |
