One that you should add to your list to discover is the amazing Umatilla Rim Trail. Location of Umatilla Rim Trail

Also known by the U.S. Forest Service as multi-use trail No. 3080, Umatilla Rim Trail is located in the Umatilla National Forest. The trail and forest are both part of the stunning Blue Mountains that are spread between northeast Oregon and southeast Washington.

There are two easy ways to access the trail. One is from Pendelton, Oregon by traveling Forest Service Road 32 to Forest Service Road 3200-045. For the upper access to the trail, in Weston, Oregon, take Summit Road to Forest Service Road 3150 for just under a mile and a half; then Forest Service Road 3150-035.

Though Umatilla Rim Trail is in Oregon, it’s an easy day trip from Washington state, and it is worth the drive.

Permitted Activities

In addition to its easy access, the Umatilla Rim Trail is a fabulous multi-use trail. Some challenging climbs and tricky descents are part of what attracts people interested in mountain biking, hiking, and horseback riding. During the winter months, part of the trail is designated for skiing. With its ascents and descents, it has earned the most difficult rating for skiers seeking a demanding trail.  

Since the trail offers scenery along with a mix of terrains, more people are making it their outdoor destination. On weekends you might encounter a few others who enjoy partaking in trail-based activities. But with the good work that is done maintaining the trail, it is easy to share the trail with others.

Umatilla Rim Ripper

For those of you looking for the first time ever adventure on the Umatilla Rim Trail, September 2023’s activity if for you. A 15.5-mile course has been mapped out in the Umatilla Forest for the race. Runners can choose either the 50K or 25K option. Those who select the longer race will run the 15.5-mile twice.

Runners will be tested by the 1,600 feet vertical climb, or 3,200 feet for those pushing themselves with the 50K distance. All participants will be rewarded with a tremendous sense of accomplishment and breathtaking views of the forest, wildflowers, and valleys once they ascend to the rim.

Another great feature of the thrilling Rim Ripper is that the trails will still be opened to other users. This will be a great inspiration for the runners to interact with mountain bikers, hikers, and maybe a horse or two!

For experienced trail runners the course offers an opportunity for personal bests; for newer trail runners, the race provides a great course to embark on a new hobby. Though spectators cannot be on the course itself, they are more than welcome. Once your family and friends experience the incredible scenery, they’ll want to return for a day of leisurely hiking, biking, or horseback riding.
